It’s something that many vehicle owners don’t think about until after they purchase their vehicle, and it quickly becomes very important: towing. Towing can be unique to each driver, yet it’s incredibly universal. Whatever your needs, big or small, there’s a Toyota that can help.
Typically we like to bring out the big guns for summer toys. While there are many lightweight boats, ATVs, and snowmobiles out there, there are also many more that are a little heavy for your average gym-goer. For towing boats and ATVs, our go-to suggestion is one of our trucks. The Tundra and Tacoma both have excellent in-bed hauling capabilities, as well as towing capacity.
The Tundra has up to a whopping 10,000 lbs of towing capacity. Let’s just say that you’ll be covered for almost any recreational boat. We’d always suggest checking your boat’s manufacturer guidelines to be sure though! You’ll find payload capacities from 5,100-5,380 based on the model you choose. If you’re not a fan of trailers, you’ll be able to drive many ATVs up into the bed of the Tundra and drive off to hit the trails.
The Tacoma, the Tundra’s little brother, is no slouch. It has a towing capacity of up to 3,500 lbs and a payload capacity of up to 1,500 lbs. While the trucks both have a wide range of bed sizes, the Tacoma is a smaller body overall and will be better for not-too-giant ATVs and snowmobiles in the bed compared to the Tundra. Both have onboard towing capabilities and available hitch connectivity in-bed (for example, to tow an RV).
When it comes to RVs, you need a truck for a fifth-wheel trailer. This type of trailer has historically been one of the most popular, and for good reason: they’re spacious! Having a fifth-wheel allows you to tow it using your truck, park, and drive away with your truck. Many people prefer these motorhomes that cannot be taken away from the park for day trips or require you to bring an additional vehicle behind. Both trucks have been seen hauling fifth-wheel trailers. Compared to toys, paying attention to your truck’s towing capacity is even more important. Know what your trailer weights and we’ll help you choose the Tacoma or Tundra that can tow it.
For smaller RVs, such as pop-up trailers and tow-behind units, your options are even more plentiful! The 4Runner, Highlander, and RAV4 are some of our most common family camping vehicles. This is because they pack tons of space in the SUV bodies and enough towing capacity to get the whole family to the lake.
